About the concert
What does revolution sound like? Beethoven wrote his “Serioso” Quartet while Napoleon occupied Vienna, defiance distilled into music. Josef Suk learned at Dvořák’s side and carried the fight for Czech cultural identity into the next generation; Dvořák’s Piano Quartet closes the evening as a triumph of that struggle. George Walker’s Lyric for Strings is its own quiet revolution: a Black American composer claiming space in a tradition that long excluded him. Four acts of musical resistance.
